How can I qualify to become a member?
You can enjoy all the benefits of membership with First Northern Credit Union if you fall under one of the following categories:
  • You live or work in the following counties in Illinois:
    Boone, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will and Winnebago.
  • You live or work in the City of Evanston
  • You are a Northwestern University Student

What's the minimum that I have to pay to open a savings account?
There is no cost to join the credit union. However, we require you to keep at least $5.00 in your savings account at all times. Then, you're free to apply for all of our other products and services.

If I want to set up direct deposit, I need an ABA #. How does that work?
It's easy. Simply give the First Northern Credit Union routing number (271078719) to your payroll department along with your First Northern account number and you're ready to enjoy the convenience of direct deposit.

How can I consolidate my debt with First Northern Credit Union?

Why doesn't First Northern offer ATM cards?
Because the First Northern Visa Check Card (debit card) is even easier and more convenient to use. You can get cash back and/or buy goods and services at convenient stores, gas stations, grocery stores and anywhere else cash, credit cards or checks are welcome.

How can I check my Visa balance during the middle of the billing cycle?

  4. Your signature

By keeping us informed, you will avoid the $3.00 fee for returned account statements.

How does interest accrue on loans? How does simple interest work?
Simple interest saves you money. It is calculated on the unpaid balance each day. If you pay off your loan early, you're only responsible for the interest that accrues until the date you pay off your loan. There is no early loan payment penalty.

If I have a credit union loan and I want to arrange a payment program, what are my options?
You can select any of the following payment methods at your convenience:

  • Payroll deduction (biweekly, semimonthly or monthly)
  • Monthly transfer from your Share Savings or Checking account
  • Mail in your payment each month

If I need help after regular business hours because my VISA card is lost or stolen, who should I contact?
You can contact First Northern Credit Union by phone at (888) 328-8677 Monday through Friday. If you are calling after our phone hours, you will contact the VISA toll-free customer service line at (800) 322-8472. You can report a lost or stolen card through this phone number as well as receive update on the last five transactions made by the card in question.
